Kern Regional Center and Area Board XII
Kern Regional Center and Area Board XII have implemented the fourth self-determination pilot project and will follow the guidelines used by the original three pilots.
The core questions to be answered by the pilot are:
- How can person-centered planning support self-determination efforts?
- How can training and information support self-determination efforts?
- How can area boards and regional centers best facilitate self-determination efforts?
- How can self-determination support culturally valued services and supports?
- How can self-determination support access to valued services in geographically unique areas?
Kern Regional Center and Area Board XII provide services to 117 consumers and/or parents in Inyo and Mono Counties. The two counties cover 13,170 square miles, on the eastern slope of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, and are isolated and sparsely populated. All consumers and families receiving Kern Regional Center services in Inyo and Mono Counties are eligible to participate in the self-determination pilot and so far 41 consumers and families have volunteer to take part in the pilot.
Kern Regional Center and Area Board XII will use the Person Centered Planning and the Life Quality Assessment process as the basis for helping consumers and families understand the vision and principles of self-determination. Individual budgets unique to the consumer's lifestyle choices and special individual needs will be developed as a part of the person centered planning process. Consumer's families will be able to have the same full range of purchase of service options and responsibilities which are available to all residents of the local communities-at-large.
The regional center and area board will develop and maintain an internet self-determination web site. This web site will support the provision of comprehensive service information to the self-determination participant and the Person Centered Planning team. A list of volunteers will be available to assist participants and their families with access to the web site.
