San Diego Regional Center and Area Board XIII

The San Diego Regional Center and Area Board XIII have implemented the fifth California self-determination pilot project and fully support the vision of Self-Determination held by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) Steering Committee for the State of California.

The core questions to be answered by the pilot are:

  • How can person-centered planning support self-determination efforts?
  • How can training and information support self-determination efforts?
  • How can area boards and regional centers best facilitate self-determination efforts?
  • How can self-determination support culturally valued services and supports?
  • How can self-determination support access to valued services in geographically unique areas?

San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) is one of the largest of the 21 California regional centers, currently serving over 13,000 consumers. San Diego County covers 4,269 square miles. The population of San Diego County is about 2.8 Million and it is the third largest metropolitan area in California. San Diego is the sixth largest city in the United States.

San Diego Regional Center, in collaboration with Area Board XIII, will work on the pilot project design and implementation. A Local Advisory Committee consisting of approximately fifteen members will be appointed by SDRC and Area Board XIII staff. The committee will reflect the multi-cultural diversity and geographic profile of SDRC's service area. Members of the Advisory Committee will include consumers, SDRC staff, Area Board staff, representatives of a vendor advisory committee, and a variety of professional staff consultants who support consumers in the community. The Committee will host monthly open meetings to receive input on the Project. The SDRC will provide oversight of the development, implementation and monitoring of all aspects of this pilot project.

A target group of approximately 30 consumers and/or families will be invited to participate in SDRC's pilot. The Advisory Committee will make recommendations to SDRC regarding the target groups and procedures to be used in identifying and training the pilot participants.
