Self-Directed Services Statute
Assembly Bill (AB)131 (Budget Act 2005: omnibus health trailer bill) repealed Section 4685.5 of the Welfare and Institutions Code and added Section 4685.7 to establish, contingent upon approval of a federal waiver, Self-Directed Services (SDS) statewide. SDS will provide participants, within a set individual budget amount, greater control over needed services and supports, consistent with the requirements set forth in the statute.
With the signing of AB 131 into law, SDS took the first major step toward realization. While much work remains to be done, the implementation of SDS will provide consumers and their families another option for arranging services and supports. SDS will offer eligible consumers the means to experience more control over their lives and determine how best to utilize available resources. The Department looks forward to working with all stakeholders to implement SDS.
