Tri-Counties Regional Center and Area Board IX

Tri-Counties Regional Center and Area Board IX have implemented a three year self-determination pilot project, and jointly endorse the vision that people with developmental disabilities will determine their own futures, with appropriate assistance from families and friends. In order to achieve this vision, Tri-Counties Regional Center (TCRC) and Area Board IX will apply the Principles of: freedom to plan and responsibility for contributing to one's community and using public dollars wisely. TCRC and Area Board IX will be providing training in the values and principals of self-determination for participants, regional center staff, and community service providers.

Thirty participants will be randomly selected, representing the ethnic and cultural diversity of the tri-counties areas. TCRC and Area Board IX are particularly interested in the effects of a self-determination approach to service delivery on adults who are not living with their families and minors with medical and/or behavior challenges who are living with families.

TCRC and Area Board IX will explore ways to establish individualized budgets for consumers and families that will be used to meet the needs and objectives established for the individual through a person centered planing process.

TCRC and Area Board IX will be gathering information on the effect of consumer and family control over the use of resources, on issues related to satisfaction with services, patterns of service utilization, and success in meeting the outcomes identified by the participant.
