Wellness Healthcare Professional Training Activities
The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) funds selected University of California Medical School Continuing Medical Education Departments and the Schools of Nursing to provide statewide training to community physicians and other healthcare professionals who serve individuals with developmental disabilities. Continuing medical education credits are offered and these programs serve to encourage other healthcare professionals to become more knowledgeable about this vulnerable population. Advisory Committees comprised of healthcare professionals from DDS, the University Medical school, and the regional centers collaborate with consumer advocates to plan each training event. Topics and speakers are chosen to provide clinical updates on pertinent medical, oral, and mental health issues and provide opportunities for staff to network with experts in the field.
DDS also sponsors mini-fellowships to provide specialized training in the area of developmental disabilities. Graduates of these programs continue to serve individuals with developmental disabilities in their local communities.
