Office of Protective Services

The Office of Protective Services (OPS) is a full Service specialized law enforcement agency with structure and rank similar to a local city police department. OPS has the responsibility for ensuring the safety and well-being of consumers and others who live, work, and visit their Developmental Centers and Community Facility (DC/CF). Uniformed police officers (Peace Officer I's) are the first to respond to or investigate complaints of criminal activity or other incidents reported by consumers, staff, or visitors of the DC/CF.

All OPS officers must undergo a thorough and successful background investigation prior to being hired. Personnel are selected based on a competitive interview process. Additionally, desired personal attributes include good moral character, positive interactions with others, excellent work habits, ability to handle stress and adversity, and their intellectual abilities. OPS is a Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) participating agency. POST was established by the Legislature in 1959 to set minimum selection and training standards for California law enforcement. OPS is committed to hiring personnel that are trained in the latest best practices. OPS is also committed to provide ongoing training, supervision, and guidance to help our sworn personnel develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities to levels that will allow them excel in their duties as public servants.
