October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).  It is a time to honor the tremendous contributions of individuals with disabilities in the workforce.  It also gives us the chance to renew our commitment to removing barriers and expanding access to employment for all.

The California Department of Education, Department of Rehabilitation, and Department of Developmental Services share this goal.  Our departments are committed to turning California’s Employment First vision into reality.  We see a California where people with disabilities can find and keep jobs alongside people without disabilities, earning fair pay and having the same opportunities for growth.

A key part of this effort is the creation of Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE) Roadmaps.  These easy-to-use guides will explain how our departments work together, what employment services are available, and who to contact for help.  The goal is to provide people with disabilities with the coordinated support they need to find meaningful work.

Training for service coordinators, vocational counselors, educators, and other employment professionals on how to use the Roadmaps is expected in early 2026.

As we celebrate NDEAM, we look ahead to a future where every Californian with a disability has the tools, opportunities, and respect they need to succeed at work.  With appreciation to the many service providers and other states that are contributing their ideas, together we can build a California where inclusion is at the heart of our economy.
