Our interactions with local school districts were highlighted at the 2nd Annual California Early Childhood Special Education Symposium, held in San Diego in October. This year’s theme was “Building Bridges” between agencies, schools and families to help provide every preschool-age student in California the opportunity to thrive.
Wes Roberson from the Department’s Children, Adolescents & Young Adult Services (CAYAS) Division partnered with Tia Marie Harrison, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Specialist from Harbor Regional Center (HRC), and Dr. Monique Rowles from Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to present on Effective Partnerships Between Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and regional centers (RCs) for the IDEA Part C to B transition. “Part C to B Transition” refers to children transitioning from Early Intervention (Part C) to Early Childhood Special Education (Part B). Wes, Tia and Dr. Rowles’ presentation showcased examples of best practices for establishing trust and rapport between HRC and LAUSD. They also discussed creating connections between systems and improving outcomes for children exiting Early Start.
