During the first full week of May, the Department joined others across the country in celebrating National Nurses Week.
We featured some of our nurses at Porterville Development Center (PDC), Canyon Springs Community Facility (CSCF) and the Office of Statewide Clinical Services. Each nurse offered a glimpse into the commitment, compassion, and professionalism that they bring to their roles every day. Their words remind us that nursing is more than a profession—it’s a calling rooted in advocacy, empathy, and a drive to improve lives.
We asked: “What does being a nurse mean to you?” Here’s what a few of them had to say:
“It means dedicating yourself to the care of others, advocating for patients and promoting health. Providing compassionate care to your patients in some of their most vulnerable times.” -Rachel, RN, Porterville Developmental Center
“It’s about using both clinical knowledge and empathy to provide quality care while treating each patient with dignity and respect. Nursing also means lifelong learning, teamwork, and adapting to challenges in order to make a meaningful difference in people’s health and well-being. It’s more than a job—it’s a calling and a commitment to serve others with integrity and heart.” -Robert, RN, Porterville Developmental Center
“Being a nurse means taking care of those who cannot take care of themselves.” -Leah, RN/HSS, Porterville Developmental Center
“It is at the heart of who I am. It means each individual under my care is approached with care and compassion. I am able use my skill to assess them and help them get the medical needs met. It’s important to me to know that I can make an impact on a person’s life not only by good nursing skills, but also approaching them with kindness and respect. A little softness and TLC goes a long way.” -Terri, RN, Canyon Springs Community Facility
