Each March, we recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. We celebrate inclusion, access, and community. In a proclamation, Governor Gavin Newsom affirmed California’s commitment to the developmental disabilities’ community. Everyone deserves to be welcomed, valued, and to have what they need to participate fully in everyday life. People with developmental and intellectual disabilities are neighbors, coworkers, friends, and community members. When barriers are removed and opportunities are accessible, everyone belongs.
Join us in honoring the experiences, contributions, and rights of people with developmental disabilities—this month and every month.
How the Right Tools Support Cindy in Finding Confidence and Belonging
- Cindy has low vision, and this reader supports her in reading books and other written information.
- Cindy uses a smart litter box in her kitchen (bottom left) to reduce the physical strain of cleaning up after her pet.
When people have the supports they need to live safely and independently, they feel a stronger sense of belonging in their communities. Cindy Misner is experiencing this firsthand through the Technology Pilot Program.
The pilot explores how the use of technology and smart devices can reduce the need for in-person staff while increasing independence, safety, and community inclusion. The Technology Pilot Program was launched in 2022 as a partnership between Alta California Regional Center, the Department, and service providers Strategies to Empower People (STEP), On My Own Independent Living Services, and East Bay Innovations.
Through this program, Cindy received several tools designed to make daily life easier and safer at home.
- Cindy checks her blood pressure at home and shares the results with her doctor each day.
- Cindy uses a device to check her blood oxygen level, as well.
Some of the devices in Cindy’s home offer support for everyday routines. For example, a robot vacuum reduces physical strain when cleaning. A smart medication dispenser helps her manage pills that may look similar.
“The pill dispensers helps so that I don’t have to have somebody hovering over me. It gives me breathing room,” said Cindy.
Other tools offer safety and peace of mind. One device can shut off the stove automatically if it is left on and a door camera lets Cindy see who is outside her home.
“My life is a lot more content with STEP and tech,” said Cindy. “It gives me more independence or freedom.” This independence gives Cindy the confidence to participate fully in her community, including taking classes at a nearby college. That’s where belonging grows.
