Residents have officially moved into their new homes at The Grinnell in downtown Berkeley!  The Grinnell is a new affordable housing apartment complex for families and people with disabilities. It was built with the support of the Department’s Community Resource Development Funding and the Regional Center of the East Bay. It’s the first affordable housing project completed for the regional center.  The apartment complex has 63 units, with 12 units dedicated for individuals and/or families of individuals supported by the regional center.

The Department’s Housing Finance Project Manager, Jim Morgan, was a guest speaker at the grand opening of The Grinnell on October 10th.  He joined Mayor Jesse Arreguin, city leaders, sponsor developer SAHA, and community members for the celebration.  It was jointly financed in partnership with the City of Berkeley, Berkeley Housing Authority, Regional Center of the East Bay, the California Department of Housing and Community Development, and Wells Fargo Bank.  The total development cost is approximately $54,000,000.  The regional center and the Department provided $1,500,000 for this project.

Thank you to each of the partner organizations who made The Grinnell apartment complex a reality.  The Department’s Office of Community Development supports the development of projects to increase affordable housing options for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  It provides gap funding for regional centers to establish multifamily projects statewide and collaborates with other state agencies to administer the federal project-based rental assistance program in California.
