Relationships Decoded for Adolescents

The purpose of Relationships Decoded for Adolescents is to 1.) Create an education program that teaches adolescents with developmental disabilities how to develop safe and meaningful relationships while also being given information about sexual abuse and coercion, 2.) Create an accessible, effective, and evidence-based teaching tool for California professionals and 3.) To educate family members how to support adolescents with disabilities to develop healthy and safe relationships.

This project will:

  • Develop an effective education program for middle and high school students with developmental disabilities that addresses healthy relationship development while also educating students about abuse, coercion, and laws of social-sexual behavior.
  • Develop an effective and evidence-based teaching tool that is accessible and user-friendly for California professionals.
  • Provide education to family members so they can support the development of healthy and safe relationships at home.

Transition Age Youth Mental Health Project

The proposed project will provide culturally and linguistically competent Peer Behavior Intervention to transition age individuals ages 14-22 who reside in Imperial County, have a dual diagnosis or at risk of developing a mental health condition, are served by San Diego Regional Center and/or are not effectively accessing mental health services or treatment.

This project will:

  • Provide support to transition age youth needing mental health services or treatment.
  • Provide training to providers (clinicians, professionals, and service providers) on topics related to dual diagnosis.
  • Provide training to family members, educators, and community members on topics related to developmental disabilities and mental health.

Substance Use Service Delivery Expansion Project

This project aims to improve substance use disorder (SUD) services for individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities (I/DD) and mental health concerns. Specifically, it will build the competency of providers supporting individuals with I/DD and SUD utilizing an e-learning Certification Program. Furthermore, this project will equip direct service providers with skills in identification and understanding of substance abuse issues, trauma-informed care, as well as provide them with tools to encourage and support individuals in treatment.

This project will:

  • Perform needs assessment and evaluations; develop and implement a survey for service providers to identify the scope of SUD among people with I/DD; and establish tools for service improvement.
  • Build competency of providers supporting individuals with I/DD and SUD utilizing an e-learning Certification Program in SUD.
  • Equip direct service providers with skills in identification and understanding of substance abuse issues, trauma-informed care, as well as provide them with tools to encourage and support population in treatment.
  • Develop a Peer Mentoring Program.

Area served: Parts of Los Angeles County – specifically Westside Regional Center’s and Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center’s service areas.
