At Canyon Springs Community Facility (CSCF), the focus is on helping each person build the skills they need to manage their own life.  Staff offer different types of support and training based on what matters most to the person and what they need to stay safe and healthy.

Who is it for?

Canyon Springs supports adults with developmental disabilities who have been referred by their regional center and have a court order recognizing danger to themselves or to other people.  They also must be transitioning from Porterville Developmental Center for community integration.

How does it work?

People live and work at CSCF while getting training and treatment to meet their individualized goals.  While at CSCF, the people receiving support work on self-management by learning:

  • coping skills
  • self-awareness
  • self-advocacy
  • how to exercise their rights
  • safe and healthy choices
  • independence
  • socialization
  • career and technical education training

What can someone expect?

The program is highly structured and supports people to gain skills for work, social situations, and daily life.  From there, they may return to their home community or move to a more independent setting.

How are family members involved?

Family members are an important part of each person’s support team.  They take part in planning and decisions through the Interdisciplinary Team.  Families stay connected through in-person visits (on or off campus), video calls, and phone calls.  This support helps reduce feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety.  When people know their loved ones are involved, they’re often more motivated to take part in therapy or treatment.  Staying close to family also helps people hold on to their sense of self, culture, and connection.

What else should we know?

The supports and services CSCF provides build on the skills each person has in the community.  People go out to shop for groceries and personal items.  They take part in local events like sports games, bowling, concerts, and other activities that the local community offers.

When in the community, individuals work on a variety of important skills.  These include saving and budgeting money, making spending decisions, practicing good manners, waiting their turn, and staying safe in public places.
