Winter holidays at the Department’s Stabilization Training Assistance Reintegration (STAR) homes are a special time when staff create warm and festive experiences for the individuals living at these homes. The team at the Central Valley STAR home held a fantastic celebration and wonderful time for all. Colorful lights twinkled outside the home alongside playful inflatable decorations featuring the Grinch, Santa, and his trusted reindeer. Inside, the kitchen was filled with an abundance of treats, both sweet and savory for everyone to enjoy.
“We always are very creative in making each event and holiday special for everyone by engaging in activities with our individuals, offering support, and creating lasting memories. We are mindful of our residents’ diverse backgrounds. We strive to be inclusive at all times, especially during the holidays,” said Program Assistant Andrena W.
Two residents expressed how much they enjoyed making their own hot cocoa with whip cream, marshmallows, and peppermint toppings. After a fun drive to look at Christmas lights, they made time to enjoy a second round of hot cocoa.
STAR home employees work all year to celebrate holidays that are important to the individuals they support, including birthdays. Trips to theme parks and cultural events also keep life interesting and create lasting memories.
The Department operates six STAR homes throughout California, with another home planned specifically for children in Vacaville. When an individual needs time-limited crisis stabilization services, they come to stay at a STAR home where they receive supports to build self-reliance and skills so they can transition to long-term community living.
