Are you looking to connect with other Latino self-advocates and families? Want to learn more about advocacy and how to make your voice heard?
The Family Resource Centers Network of California (FRCNCA) recently launched VALOR. It is a new statewide leadership program for Latino self-advocates and families of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities (IDD).
VALOR stands for Voces, Acción y Liderazgo Organizado para la Resiliencia (Voices, Action, and Leadership Organized for Resilience). Its aim is to get individuals and families more connected, informed, and involved in their communities by:
- attending leadership trainings
- connecting with mentors
- meeting other self-advocates and families
- joining local meetings and statewide events
- sharing experiences and concerns
- strengthening Latino advocacy across California
“Families and self-advocates have valuable experiences,” said Joe Perales, VALOR’s Director of Partnerships/Equity Initiatives. “This new network of Latino leaders can help improve services, strengthen communities, and influence positive change.” VALOR is available through 47 of California’s Family Resource Centers (FRCs). Together, the centers serve every county and all 21 regional center areas.
